Kamloops is located close
to midway between Vancouver and Calgary and has a population of
80 k and rising. It has all the usual facilities as hospital,
theater, exhibition grounds etc. North and South Thompson Rivers
converge in Kamloops and continue their travel to Vancouver. The
name Kamloops is derived from the Indian word "Kahm-o-loops"
which means "meeting of the waters". It was a small
country town before WW1 with apple growing as the major agricultural
industry. When the able men went to war, the aqueducts for the
irrigation system could not be maintained by the remaining older
men and women and the apple growing declined. In some places the
remains of the old flumes are still visible along the Yellowhead
highway.
