Gimle Ecological Farm
More Information about our beautiful property

Our Hay Field with the garden in the foreground This magnificent land is located in an east-west valley with more than 2,000 hours of sunshine/year not only in the middle of the day as in most places in British Columbia because of the mountain ranges being north-south. Here we get the morning and evening sun penetrating the fresh mountain air. It is very seldom that you can find an east-west valley in British Columbia and particularly with the mountains positioned to get the sun in early morning and late evening. The average yearly precipitation is 471 mm. Our farm has scattered small fields surrounded by trees and with two year-round creeks ( one with rainbow trout ) running through the middle. From one of the creeks we take irrigation water by gravity ( 10 atm ). I do not think it possible to describe the beauty and serenity of this place and its surroundings; in the middle of nature, still close to the so called civilization.

We have applied "organic" methods since we purchased this jewel, no poison has been used in any form and no artificial fertilizer has been applied to our fields. The irrigated fields are presently yielding 4-5 tons alfalfa(lucerne)/grass mix hay annually/ac., in two cuts.

Our garden The Garden supplies all the vegetables we need year round, which consists of: Beans: 5 varieties, 2 climbers and 3 bush beans. Beets: 2 varieties. Broccoli: 2 varieties, one early and one late. Cabbage: White Cabbage, Cauliflower, Red Cabbage, Brussel Sprouts, Kale and Rutabaga. Carrots: 3 varieties.Corn, a delicious early variety of Sweet Corn, Cucumbers: 3 varieties. Onions: Bunching Onions, Garlic, Storage Onions and Leeks. Peas, Potatoes, Squash. Tomatoes and Peppers in the greenhouse.

In the Herb-and-Salad garden we grow Lettuce of different kinds, Asparagus, Chard, Horseradish, Radishes, Rhubarb and Spinach plus a great variety of Herbs "pour La Cuisine": Basil, Caraway, Chives, Dill, Hyssop, Leaf Celery, Lovage, Oregano, Parsley, Sage, Sorrel, Terragon and Thyme are perennial spices while Bea Balm, Mint, Camomille and Lemon Balm end up in the tea-pot.

In the Berry Patch you can find: Black Currants, Goose berries, Raspberries, Saskatoon berries and Strawberries.

The wild fauna and flora are abundant and versatile: Deer, Bighorn sheep, Moose, Cougar, Black bear, Badger, Bobcat, Lynx, Coyote, Wolf, Marmot, Fox, Skunk, Hare, Rabbit, Marten, Squirrel, Chipmunk, Gopher, Beaver, Wolverine, Eagle, Hawk, Heron, Falcon, Wiskey jack, Blue jay, Swallows, Warbler, Woodpecker ( several species ) Grouse, Pheasant, Robin, Owl, Humming bird.
