REFLECTIONS ABOUT "GIMLE" AND THE WORLD SITUATION
.

Y2K!!?? What will happen? We have a fair idea but a lot of uncertainties are lurking around the corner. Many people, maybe most, see Y2K as just an easily resolved problem, rectified by our "highly sophisticated" technology. I am afraid it is not so. It is the first time in the history of man that a time limit can not be changed. Millions of embedded chips are in applications we don't even know or records are  missing. The possibility of a breakdown in the structure of our society is certainly there, and unrest can be expected. It will be interesting, to say the least, to see what will happen. Maybe something good will come out of Y2K. Maybe people will start to think of the future, what we have to do to control and reduce the overpopulation and consequent problems.

In the late 60's I started to realize that there was a limit to growth, not only in economics but in the human population world wide. In the year of 1825 the world population was estimated to be 1 billion. To reach that number it took 5 million years. The next billion was achieved in 1930, after only 105 years. In the late 60's, in less than 30 years, another billion was added to the world population. Today we have added 3 billion more people in less than 30 years,  reaching 6 billions. It does not take a high IQ to see that something is going to happen, and that "something" will not be very pleasant for any of us. It already shows all around the globe, close and far away. One is thing is for sure: you do not want to be in a city. You have got to be in a place where food can be grown and energy can be produced. Also the place has to be secluded, for security reasons. "GIMLE" Ranch is such a place.

In our search 10 years ago we tried to find a place which met the following criteria:

AS LITTLE POLLUTION AS POSSIBLE: No pesticide, fungicide or herbicide use on neither ours nor neighbours' property.
NO MINERAL OR GAS AND OIL EXPLOITATION.
REMOTE: Only a few neighbours but reasonable distance to supply town with some intellectual activity.
EAST WEST VALLEY: Not only mid-day but also morning and evening sun a must.
SOIL: Arable part of land must have a reasonable soil quality.
WATER: Year round creek from unpolluted catchment area.
CLIMATE: 4 seasons with winter snow and summer rain. No flooding and other apparant risks for climatic disasters.
ZONING: Not in ALR (Agriculture Land Reserve, which would mean that the land could only be used for agriculture).
TELEPHONE AND POWER: Must be possible.
ROAD ACCESS: A small road, but maintained (and snow ploughed), with little or no traffic.

After 36 000 km. (22 500 miles) and 5 months of cruising the central and south-east of British Columbia we found this place we call "GIMLE". (Gimle was the Nordic god Odin's farm in Valhalla - the Vikings' paradise). We think we live in a place close to paradise. All of our criteria were not only met but exceeded. Here are 2 year round creeks, one of which is gravity feeding our irrigation system from the mountains to the south. Kamloops with close to 80 000 inhabitants, theatre, symphony orchestra, exhibitions, university college, airport etc. is our supply town. The only thing we did not get in the beginning was full telephone service. Only party line was available. All lines are now being upgraded and we have full service with local call to Kamloops. The road is as good as we want it to be (to good - too many sightseers), is maintained regularly and ploughed in winter.

Apart from above criteria being met the Zoning allows for subdivision to 10 ac. In my opinion 20 ac should be min. so we applied for preliminary subdivision as shown, and it was approved. What it means is that a group of people can buy and build on the property, running the ranch/farm together in a safe place where food and fuel is available. If somebody would want an 800 m. runway (airstrip) it could be possible.

The economical value of land will undoubtedly go high when the truth of the Present and Future cannot be camouflaged by the controlling World Economy/Government and Media.
